A Little Bit About Farmersville, Texas
Farmersville, Texas is located eighteen miles east of McKinney, fifteen miles west of Greenville, twenty-one miles south of Trenton, and twenty-nine miles southwest of Texas Best Propane’s World Headquarters in Randolph, Texas. Farmersville occupies a total land area of 4.0 square miles and, according to the 2010 United States census, has a population of 3,301 and over 1,500 students enrolled in the Farmersville Independent School District.
Farmersville was founded on the Jefferson-McKinney Road in 1849 by pioneer farmers William Chapman and John Hendrex and named for the region’s chief occupation. It served as a trading center for the local farmers who exported cattle and bois d’arc fence posts upon arrival of the railroad. Subsequent crops included cotton, corn, and maize, as well as cantaloupes and onions. Farmersville was once known as the “Onion Capital of North Texas”.
The community gradually expanded and established the Little Flock Baptist Church in 1855, and the First Methodist Church in 1856 and the First Baptist Church in 1865. The Farmersville U.S. Post Office was granted in 1857. Private schools were extant as early as the 1860s and the public school system was founded in 1890.
Audie Murphy was born just outside of Farmersville and lived in Farmersville until his entry into the United States Army. He became the most decorated soldier of World War II and came home to a hero’s welcome in downtown Farmersville in 1945.
