A Little Bit About Cooper, Texas

Cooper, Texas is the county seat and most populated city of Delta County. Cooper is located twenty-three miles southeast of Paris, twenty-one miles northwest of Sulphur Springs, sixteen miles northeast of Commerce, forty miles southeast of Bonham, and a few miles north of Cooper Lake at the junction of state highway 24 and state highway 154.

French explorer François Hervey was the first European to pass through the area in 1750. Numerous small communities sprang up in what would become Delta County in the early 1800s. Cooper was founded in 1870 and incorporated in 1881. It was named after Leroy Cooper, a Texas congressman from Houston who helped establish Delta County. The first Delta County courthouse was built in 1881 and replaced in 1940. The community grew rapidly after it was established and had grown to 300 residents by 1885 and, spurred on by the construction of the Texas Midland Railroad, reached a population of 1,000 by 1896. The population reached its zenith of over 2,500 in 1925 and has since gradually declined to its current size of just under 2,000.

Work on Cooper Lake was begun in 1986 and completed five years later. It has been the most popular recreational attraction in the area since its opening. Boating, fishing, hunting, swimming, hiking, birdwatching, and equestrian pursuits are popular activities. It is stocked with crappie, largemouth bass, and catfish.

Cooper is located in the Texas Blackland Prarie region, which is the rich, deep clay rolling prarie that covers much of north-central Texas. This soil has served as the foundation for the areas biggest industry - agriculture. Since it was founded, the community has served as a regional center for surrounding farms that have produced varied cash crops including cotton, corn, sorghum, potatoes, oats, wheat, etc. as well as livestock including beef cattle, dairy cattle, poultry, and swine production.
