A Little Bit About Grayson County, Texas

Grayson County, Texas is bordered on the North by Lake Texoma and the Red River, to the East by Fannin County, to the Southeast by Collin County, to the Southwest by Denton County, and to the West by Cooke County. Sherman, the county seat, is located at the junction of Texas State Highway 82 and Texas State Highway 75, approximately sixty-five miles north of Dallas.

The northern end of Grayson County drains into Lake Texoma and the Red River, and is characterized by the acidic, loamy soils of the Post Oak Belt that support healthy stands of oak, elm, bois d'arc, and pecan trees. The southern end of Grayson County that drains to tributaries of the Trinity River sports the classic blackland soils so common to North Texas.

The first settlers of what would become Grayson County arrived via river boat and established the Red River Preston Bend Trading Post in 1836. The Texas legislature created Grayson County in 1846 by carving 979 square miles out of western Fannin County. It was named for Peter W. Grayson who served in the Texas Revolution and was attorney general for the Republic. Sherman (named for Colonel Sidney Sherman - a hero in the Battle of San Jacinto) was designated the county seat the same year.

Natural resources includes sand and gravel as well as oil and gas. Major agricultural products include beef cattle, horses, hay, and small grains such as wheat, oats, corn, and sorghum. Other industries include healthcare, varied light manufacturing, food production and packaging, etc.

The population of Grayson County has long enjoyed steady growth thanks to expansion of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, maturation of local businesses, influx of new businesses, and increasing numbers of commuters who work to the south.
